Education Opportunity Day Highlights College Choices

Johnston, SC – Strom Thurmond High School hosted over 50 colleges and universities for 2022 Educational Opportunity Day on Tuesday, September 20, 2022. All junior and senior students were given the opportunity to engage and interact with many post-secondary schools at one time and in a single location.

“I’m just looking for a college right now and I don’t know what the colleges here are able to offer so I’m ready to learn more,” stated STHS Junior Chloe Nelson.

Senior Alexis Stephens, who has plans to join the military after high school, said she

“My plan is to join the military to help pay for college, but I also want to set myself up in the military for what I want to do in college,” Alexis commented.

Other students wanted to learn more about the many different fields of study they could possibly major in.

“I was very surprised at how many majors you could look at and I thought that was cool because you can get very specific as far as what you want to do,” stated STHS Junior Whitt Miller.

Athletics was a focus area for some students like junior Jniya Barnes, who participates in track and field.

“I really liked the fact that a lot of the schools represented here have indoor and outdoor track facilities so you can participate all year long,” Jniya commented.

Senior Makai Williams said he enjoyed the event and appreciated the opportunity to meet representatives from in-state institutions as well as those from outside the state as well.

“It was fun getting to learn about new colleges and opportunities I could have in the future,” Makai stated.
