Rebels, Lady Rebels Sweep Ninety Six in Busy Night at the “Rebel Zone”

Johnson, SC – Thursday evening (March 9) was a great night for home fans at the “Rebel Zone” as all four Strom Thurmond High School (STHS) teams in action were victorious over visiting Ninety Six High School.
 
The STHS junior varsity baseball team got the action started with an 8-0 shutout win. Griffin Thompson got the start on the mound for the JV Rebels and did not allow a run.
 
Then the STHS varsity girls’ soccer team engaged in a fantastic matchup with Ninety Six that was not decided until overtime, when a game-winning goal by Katlyn Chinn sealed the 6-5 victory (and a 2-0 start to the season) for the Lady Rebels. Silvia Huston opened the scoring for the Lady Rebels and finished with two goals and an assist. Katlyn had a “hat trick” of three goals in the first half and finished strong with her fourth score in overtime.
 
The Lady Rebels had 12 total shots on goal. In goal, keepers Sophie Simpkins and Erin Williams combined for eight saves.
 
Pitcher Cody Davenport got the start for the varsity Rebels’ baseball team against Ninety Six and he performed well as STHS ran away from the Wildcats in a 12-5 victory. Dallas Hitt, Drew Johnson, and James Creasy led the way for the Rebels offensively.
 
Finally, the STHS varsity boys’ soccer team improved to 3-2 overall on the season with a convincing win over the Wildcats led by Eric Rivera’s four goals (he already has 10 this season). Sam Vilamil and Anderson Escalante each added two goals in the game for the Rebels.
