Johnston, SC – Strom Thurmond High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) cadets put on a terrific performance during the unit's annual “Pass-in-Review” ceremony, held Tuesday, February 21, 2023.

Strom Thurmond High School Naval Science Instructor Lt. (Ret.) Charles Bayorek congratulated the cadets on a job well done.

“The cadets did an amazing job," stated Lt. Bayorek. “We had seventy-seven cadets on the floor that performed during the pass in review ceremony and they did it extremely well.”

Strom Thurmond High School Principal, Fran Altringer, thanked parents and community members for their attendance and support and praised the day-to-day performance of the cadets.

“In my brief time here I have seen the exceptional work of our NJROTC students and they are great examples of Strom Thurmond High School students,” she stated.

The NJROTC curriculum emphasizes citizenship and leadership development, as well as our maritime heritage, the significance of sea power, and naval topics such as the fundamentals of naval operations, seamanship, navigation and meteorology. Classroom instruction is augmented throughout the year by community service activities, drill competitions, field meets, flights, visits to naval activities, marksmanship training, and other military training. Uniforms, textbooks, training aids, travel allowance, and a substantial portion of instructors' salaries are provided by the Navy.

Elements presented during the ceremony incorporate the entire spectrum of NJROTC instruction, from unarmed unit drill and uniform inspection to formation drill by platoon and knowledge of United States Navy protocols.

“The ceremony puts on display almost everything we do,” commented Bayorek. “This is where it all comes together. The community should be very proud of our Strom Thurmond cadets; they did an awesome job.”
