Johnston, SC– Faculty members at Johnston Elementary School (JES) donned capes and students wore the silliest socks they could find recently to support Childhood Cancer Awareness Week (Sept. 19-23). The week is especially important to the school following the 2018 passing of pre-kindergarten student Cashous Gantt.

“We had a four-year-old student (Cashous Gantt) who passed away and his brother Gregory is a student here in the fourth grade, and he has been very active in doing things like selling lollipops to help sucker punch childhood cancer,” stated JES Principal Tammy Martin. “We’ve also had sock it to childhood cancer day where our students wore silly socks.”

The school celebrated the week with themed days like Capes for Cashous because of Cashous’ love of superheroes. Teachers wore gold capes that day, as gold is the color of Childhood Cancer Awareness Week.

“Cashous loved superheroes like PJ Masks and Spider-Man so we all wore capes and masks,” Mrs. Martin added. “He was a real trooper. He came in his little wheel chair and tried so hard everyday to push through so we want to remember him and celebrate his life. Our students have made posters and get well cards for children who are hospitalized, they’ve sold lollipops to raise money for a donation to a childhood cancer organization, and we’ve had a really good time with everything this week.”
